STAY OR LEAVE? A hard choice for HK mainland students

803302297

It is always a hard choice for mainland students to decide whether they should go back to their hometown or get a working experience here in Hong Kong after finishing their studies.

The following statistics conducted by Nanfang Metropolis Daily are showing the increasing number of mainland students studying and working in Hong Kong.

For the undergraduate mainland students, it may seem reasonable to work or study for 3 more years in order to get a permanent residency identity due to the policy.

Below are the statistics of employment directions for mainland undergraduate in major Hong Kong university  in 2011 and 2012, which is survey by hkmingxiao.com.

However, for us mainland students who are pursuing our master degree, it is a more simple and difficult decision making progress. Our study period is less than a year. And even though we can always update our stay visa to a one-year work visa after graduation, it is still too far to meet the  standard of staying in Hong Kong for a continuous 7 years to get the permanent residency identity.

So for most of us, the question is should we just leave Hong Kong to find a job in mainland China where we can settle down, get married and fight for a career? Or should we make use of the one-year work visa,  stay for possibly a year and see how things goes? And after the one-year period, we can choose to stay longer with a decent job or we can get back to mainland with the advantage of an international working experience.

Actually, we will always go back to mainland, where we have our home and root, our parents, friends and our everything. And here in Hong Kong, we don’t have a feeling of belonging and being connected. It is not a easy thing to build our relationship with the place and its people. So if we are going back, is it worthwhile in terms of the working, living and study quality to take our time here for the time cost is super high.

Time waits for no one,  the best time of our life-the youth flies, which is especially cruel for girls. So make a clear plan after careful consideration and make your own decision of stay or leave! As for me, I am willing to take the risk and the opportunity to prove myself here after graduation!

THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA: A cozy side in HONG KONG

As Asia’s World City, Hong Kong stands out for its international finance and tourism. This kind of economic structure and development leads to the fast-pace modern lifestyle for people living and working here.

However, there are other sides in Hong Kong.  When you walk along the promenade in Tsim Sha Tsui, you can see people walking, exercising and fishing by the sea, getting relaxed with the beautiful view of Victoria Harbour.

In the video, an old man is having a great time fishing at the promenade in Tsim Sha Tsui. It does’t matter whether he catch the fish or not, it is the experience of a journey from body relax to soul touch that matters.

For people who suffered from heavy burden and the fast pace, take your time to join the old man at the promenade in Tsim Sha Tsui, then enjoy your exciting life in Hong Kong!

A Simple Comparison of PHOENIX TV: Base in Beijing and Hong Kong

1078032800_meitu_3

As a mainlander, Phoenix TV has always been the representative of Hong Kong media and a way to learn more ‘objective’ facts about the outer world.

So when I had the opportunity to work for the Phoenix TV in Beijing, I was really excited. I had witness the construction of Phoenix International Media Center on my way from home to school, attracting by its bird’s nest shape and its glory with the reflection of sunlight during the day as well as the luster of night light at night. During the senior year, the center was completed. I went there several times and have a closer look at it. However, amazed by its majesty, I felt a lack of belonging and a sense of empty feeling.

Then I decided to continue my study here in Hong Kong and got the chance to visit headquarter of Phoenix TV. However, I was kind of disappointed. The building was small, no big differences with other ordinary office buildings, and located in suburb unlike the one in Beijing which located in the most prosperous region close to Sanlitun Village. It just cannot match the great influences it had in the Chinese community. Just like always, you get closer to your dream, and the bubble of fantasy burst.

I went there for another time, had a photo taken with the TV host I like. Like the first time, the security had a thorough check on our identity; the host plays jokes with other staffs and makes fun of the politics. I can feel the strict regulation, the limited media ‘freedom’ and the pleasant working environment.

In my personal perspective, maybe superficial and naïve, the Phoenix TV in Beijing and the one in Hong Kong somewhat represent the situation of economic, political and cultural strength between mainland China and Hong Kong.

You may ask which system I like? I would say that I want to work in the environment combining both, just like I enjoy both the life of Beijing and Hong Kong which offer me different experiences and opportunities.

In conclusion, the bird in the cage may want its freedom as well as a place to rest when tired and that’s where we call ‘home’.

HONG KONG STYLE: A Fusion of Western and East

Many influential cities have got their recognizable fashion trademarks. And people are wondering what is Hong Kong’s? Arthur Tam searches into this question.

Hong Kong style is about finding the new and the popular, and how all the items are been put together. It is not just a copy of Western style, but rather a fusion of Western and East.

It’s a style that combines the abundance of available fashion with urban lifestyle. So the essence of Hong Kong fashion may be how quick we take up the global trends, and mix them without restriction.

ABOUT ME: A Rising Star in the Media and Fashion Industry

Welcome to Fashion in Hong Kong!

I am Snowjem, a girl who is found of media and fashion industry.

I came from Beijing, and I tried hard to find the essence of Hong Kong Fashion Industry.

There are two things that you should remember about me.

1 : 179 cm

muc2011-1

I have always been the tallest girl in the class during my school years. And I don’t want to waste the advantage of this height. So I took some model training after the college entrance exam and start doing some part time modeling work to get into the fashion industry. I even attend the MISS UNIVERSE CHINA in 2011 and won a special award.

MUC2011    muc2011-3

Those experiences were really interesting because I got to work with some of the most talented people in the industry and it inspired me a lot!!!

And now I am studying in Hong Kong, I hope that I can have a glance of the fashion industry in Hong Kong, and I also want to have a try to work as the editor of the fashion magazines when I graduate.

2 : BASKETBALL

I also love sports like basketball and tennis. And CARMELO ANTHONY from the NEW YORK KNICKS is my favorite player. I am the leader of his fans club in China and as well as the forum moderator of the knicks of HOOPCHINA.

I started watching his game since 2006 FIBA and I met him for twice during his Jordan Flight Tour to China. I even got a chance to hug and take picture with him in 2011. This made my dream come true.

I also play the basketball myself, which makes me a what we call “nv hanzi” in real life.
